Letter to the Editor: EOJ prepared for by-elections

July 12, 2017

Dear Editor:

I write in response to an article published in the Daily Observer on July 12, 2017 entitled ‘EOJ prepared for by-election to replace Portia’, in which it was stated that the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has no plans in place to conduct a by-election to replace Member of Parliament for St. Andrew Southern, Omar Davies.

However, I wish to clarify the matter by advising that the EOJ is prepared to conduct any by-election that is announced, regardless of the constituency. There are no special plans for the constituency of St. Andrew South Western as opposed to St. Andrew Southern at this time as the EOJ has not been formally advised of the vacancies. The EOJ will be ready to conduct a by-election in any constituency within the statutory time frame prescribed in the electoral laws, once it has been announced.
